Byelaw 4 Whelk Permit Review

NWIFCA are reviewing the Byelaw 4 flexible permit conditions. As part of this process, we are seeking input from current whelk permit holders, and any individuals who may be interested in applying for a whelk permit in the future.

The purpose of this questionnaire is to gather stakeholders’ views on topics including pot limits for individual vessels and the wider fleet and potential demand for future permits.

Please note that the application process for a whelk permit is currently closed and that this questionnaire is not an indication that permits will definitely reopen, but instead will form part of the review process of the flexible permit conditions along with other data (such as landings).

How To Participate

Option 1: Complete the questionnaire

Fill out the questionnaire here (it should take no more than 15 minutes to complete):

Please ensure your response is submitted by 4th January 2026.

Option 2: Arrange a call

If you are unable to complete the questionnaire online or on paper, you can arrange a phone call with a member of our team. Contact us at [email protected] or call 01524 727970 to set up a time.

All stakeholders who call us will be guided through the questionnaire over the phone.

Use Of Data

All responses to the questionnaire will be kept confidential. The results of the questionnaire will then be incorporated into our review process of the flexible permit conditions for whelk pots, which will be presented anonymously to the Authority. Individual responses will not be identifiable in any material.

In the questionnaire we have asked you to provide your permit number (or PLN and vessel name), this is only so the questionnaire is fair for all stakeholders. We want to reduce the risk of any individual submitting multiple questionnaire responses and so your permit number/PLN and vessel name is taken to ensure you contribute only once to the questionnaire.
