Shrimp Project Workshop

Following on from the initial report released in 2025 which investigated the decline in shrimp landings in the district, the University of Salford in collaboration with NWIFCA, CEFAS and MGET have been rewarded funding for a Shrimp Environment Assessment Study (SEAS) through the COAST-R Network.

Eight New Projects Funded to Strengthen Coastal Resilience Across the UK  – Coast R Network

This project aims to combine local knowledge, ecological monitoring and contaminant analysis to address the shrimp population declines. The project is based in Morecambe Bay however we expect that the results will be applicable to the rest of the district, allowing future efforts to focus on other important areas for shrimping.

An initial workshop will be held on the 17th April at 10am – 1pm  at Victoria Hall in Grange-over-Sands to gather local observations on the issues, explain the work that is being planned and to co-define research priorities.

Supported by the Coast-R Network Small Grants Fund and organised by the University of Salford in collaboration with NWIFCA, CEFAS, and the Mersey Gateway Environmental Trust, this workshop will bring together fishers, scientists, and policymakers to exchange knowledge and ideas. The workshop aims to foster collaboration between fishers, scientists, and policymakers by creating a platform for knowledge exchange and joint learning. By integrating local observations with scientific evidence, the session will explore the drivers behind declining shrimp populations and support the co-development of practical monitoring strategies and management approaches that strengthen the resilience of coastal fisheries

This is an open meeting where everyone is invited to join, reimbursement may be available for commercial fishers (please contact the office to discuss).

Lunch will be provided.
