Call For Evidence
If you are an angler operating in the Wirral, we would like to hear from you.
The North West Inshore Fisheries Conservation Authority (NWIFCA) is currently looking into the wash-up of Smooth-hounds (both Starry and Common species) along the Wirral coastline. As part of this, we are issuing a call for evidence to all anglers who fish in the boxed area below (from Formby Point to Hilbre Island). We have created an anonymous questionnaire to gather information on angling activity and any interactions with Smooth-hounds.

Background Information
In recent years, there have been increasing reports of dead marine life – particularly Smooth-hounds – washing up along the Wirral coast. These events have raised public concern about potential links to local fishing activity.
NWIFCA is seeking input from local anglers to better understand their experiences and observations related to Smooth-hounds. This call for evidence will remain open for two months, from 22/10/25 until 22/12/25.
How To Participate
Complete the questionnaire
Fill out the questionnaire here (It should take no more than 10 minutes to complete):
Alternatively, request a copy by calling our office on 01524 727970
Please ensure your response is submitted by 22/12/25.
Use Of Data
All responses to the questionnaire will be kept confidential. The results of the questionnaire will then be incorporated into a report and used to assist further research which will be presented anonymously to the Authority. Individual responses will not be identifiable in any material.
In the questionnaire we have asked you to provide your name, this is only so the call for evidence is fair for all stakeholders. We want to reduce the risk of any individual submitting multiple questionnaire responses and so your name is taken to ensure you contribute only once to the questionnaire.
