Cold Weather Protocol – Flookburgh Closed

As per the Authority’s Cold Weather Protocol, the Flookburgh cockle fishery will be closed from Tuesday 6th January to Saturday 10th January inclusive. This is due to the temperature being at or below freezing for at least half the time in the past five days. We will continue to monitor the local temperatures and the closure may be extended if the freezing temperatures persist. However, forecasts suggest temperatures in the Flookburgh area will rise today and stay above freezing for the remainder of the week. We therefore do not currently anticipate the five-day closure being extended. As it stands, the fishery will reopen on Monday 12th January on the open tide for that date (LW 12:03). NB Sunday 11th January is a non-fishing day anyway.

Please note, we are also monitoring temperatures at the Pilling and Newbiggin cockle fisheries under the same protocol, and these fisheries may also have to close, although currently the threshold for closure has not been reached. Further information will be provided accordingly.
