Hand Gathering: Seed Mussel Fisheries Open

Hand gathered seed mussel fisheries at Heysham Flat and Seafield Road, Lytham are open to Byelaw 3 permit holders. Please see the flexible conditions below for full details of each fishery.

Heysham Flat Seed Mussel Fishery 2022

  1. Fishing is permitted between 9th September and 31st December 2022. Access to the fishery is from the Battery Car Park. Permits must be obtained from Lancaster City Council Public Realm Department prior to accessing the fishery.
  2. Byelaw 3 Permit holders may remove undersized mussels from Heysham Flat, in the permitted fishing and transiting area.
  3. The permitted fishing and transiting area is the area enclosed by a straight line connecting points A, B, C, D, in order, and returning to point A along the line of the Highest Astronomic Tide and illustrated in the map at Annex A.

  4. The fishery is within a Marine Protected Area, as certain conditions have to be met for a seed mussel fishery to be Habitat Regulations Assessment compliant. Should there be evidence that these conditions are no longer met and there is potential for damage to protected features. The fishery will be suspended until further assessment has been carried out.

Advisory Notes

  1. This permit does not exonerate the holder from any other sea fisheries legislation.
  2. When fishing or when operating vehicles in the vicinity of Heysham Flat Skear take to avoid live colonies of the Honeycomb Worm. These are a protected species, and damaging them could lead to a fine of up to £20,000, withdrawal of flexible permit conditions and closure of the fishery.
  3. NWIFCA has the power to withdraw flexible permit conditions at any point should the need arise, subject to the review procedure.
  4. Any breach of the conditions constitutes a breach of the byelaw.

Seafield Slip Seed Mussel Fishery 2022

  1. Fishing is permitted between 9th September and 31st December 2022.
  2. Byelaw 3 Permit holders may remove undersized mussels from Seafield Slip (Ribble Estuary), in the permitted fishing area.
  3. The permitted fishing area is the area enclosed by a straight line connecting points A, B, C, D, E, F in order, and returning to point A, and illustrated in the map at Annex A.
